In 1850 P&O's steamers left Southampton for Alexandria on the 20th of every month, carrying with them passengers and an estimated 200 bags of letters bound for the 'overland route' of the mail to India. (Taken from an album of thirty-one watercolours, recording the Diorama of the Overland Mail Route from Southampton to Calcutta, and presented to Brodie McGhie Willcox, one of the founding fathers of P&O.)
