Description:
On the verso, 'The MV EARL OF ZETLAND (1939) made her maiden voyage from Aberdeen to Lerwick in August 1939 accompanied by her predecessor and namesake which had served the Shetland islanders for the previous 62 years. The 'new Earl' as she was known is 155 feet long and weighs 548 tons. Although bombed during World War II and reportedly sunk at the time of Dunkirk, the 'Earl's' war record saw her carry over 600,000 passengers as she steamed over 100,000 miles to and fro across the Pentland Firth. As a passenger and cargo ferry, the 'Earl' sailed the Northern Isles until 1975 when she was purchased by a marine surveying company and was renamed MV CELTIC SURVEYOR. In 1979, the 'Earl' started her new career in the leisure industry and after a spell in London's Docklands, she was refitted at a total cost of £1.5 million and towed to Eastbourne in 1993 where she reverted to her original name to begin yet another chapter in her grand career.'
