Description:
Two or three days after departing Ceylon, the first experience of India was Madras, with its distinctive turbulent shoreline and the Fort of St. George (on the left) and the warehouses and offices of the merchants. (Taken from an album of thirty-one watercolours, recording the Diorama of the Overland Mail Route from Southampton to Calcutta, and presented to Brodie McGhie Willcox, one of the founding fathers of P&O.)
