Cadet to Captain

Joining P&O in 1975, was just the start of Barbara Sampeys's trailblazing journey from cadet to captain.

From cargo vessels, Barbara moved to P&O’s cruise fleet gaining her master’s certificate in 1986, before transferring to P&O Scottish Ferries, where she was chief officer on ST. SUNNIVA.

Trading up to tall ships, Captain Barbara went on to become the first female master of the Sailing Training Association. She was one of the first three women admitted into Trinity House, as one of the Younger Brethren, and was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal in 2007 and Victoria Drummond Award in 2015.

Captain Barbara Campbell (nee Sampeys) has recently retired after a 43-year career at sea.
