Adult entertainment was the job of the 'Hostess'. The long tradition of passengers entertaining themselves came to an end with the growth of cruising and a post-war push to professionalise on board services.
There was no formal training, or job description. Instead hostesses were expected to turn their hand to almost anything that might please or placate a passenger, at any hour of the day or night.
Clutching clipboards, and directing a daily digest of activities, hostesses were blessed with an entertainments budget and a right of access to the passenger areas afforded only to Senior Officers.
