Fire

Within minutes the heat generated by the explosion had sparked a fire which was first reported in the 1st Class Smoking Room. Urgent attempts were made to extinguish the fire with hoses “but no water came from the hydrants”.

Fanned by the still strong gale force winds on the port quarter, the whole of the midships accommodation on the starboard side became “a blazing inferno” in a matter of minutes.
