Stewardess: Maid to One & All

The term ‘stewardess’ first appeared on the 1821 census. Dressed like maids ashore, stewardesses catered solely to the needs of female passengers and lived and worked in the ‘Ladies’ section of the ship.

 

For almost a century, the role of stewardess was the only route for women to work at sea.
