The Ships of the M-Class

M Class Ships

First Class Dining Saloon onboard MOLDAVIA (Black & white gelatin print) and a P&O Dining Saloon chair with a reversible seat made from mahogany with a cast iron base.

c.1900s

P&O Ref: PH/02767/00 and AC/05082/00

Typical of its type, the chair above was bolted through the cast iron base to the deck, with a revolving seat and upper to allow passengers to take their place at the long banquet tables of the dining saloons, as seen in this photograph of the First Class dining saloon onboard Moldavia.  Chairs of this design were in use on P&O ships from the 1880’s up to the First World War.
