On 13th January 1910, P&O acquired Lund's Blue Anchor Line and five of the company's steamers for the grand price of £275,000.

The purchase gave P&O an alternative route to Australia, via Africa and the Cape, greater cargo capacity and a new and different class of passenger.

The traditional route of P&O's steamers to Australia via India and Ceylon was determined by the Government mail contract.

During the busy passenger season the demand for First and Second Class berths to India and The Colonies was such that there was precious little room for steerage and Third Class passengers.
