Hospital Ships: PLASSY at Jutland

Having safely delivered their troops, many P&O and BI transport ships were redeployed as hospital ships.

Military hospital ships were staffed by sisters, nurses and large numbers of orderlies and performed essentially a transport function, moving the wounded away from battle to hospitals ashore. Generally those on board had first received some treatment at field dressing stations or on board ship as in the Battle of Jutland.
